Tests of Vestibular Function
Most of the current tests of vestibular function are relevant to only to the lateral semicircular canal. This table provides an outline of the current status of vestibular testing.
Vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) is a new test being developed to test the function of the saccule. It is still an investigational procedure, meaning finding a testing facility may be difficult. This technique uses loud sounds to stimulate the inner ear and measure the response.
Galvanic stimulation, though an old technique, has yet to see widespread use. An electrical current is passed through the ear and changes in eye movements and posture are observed. Passing an electrical current through the ear is a painful procedure but may become more commonly used as vestibular prostheses become available.
